MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCE

A smart approach…Intelligence is the capacity to do something useful in the society in
which we live. Intelligence is the ability to respond successfully to new situation and
the capacity to learn from one’s past experiences. – D. Howard Gardner

Learner’s need balanced opportunities to make sense of the learning for themselves using
language and text; movement and touch; logic and number; diagram and pictures; active
Listening/Music/Rhyme; working with others and working independently. Encouraging
learner’s to make choices about how they explore the learning through the option of
different activities will further encourage independent learning and motivation. The
human inclination to learn, to know and understand the world and experience in these
diverse ways is referred to as multiple intelligence. Dr Howard Gardner, Professor of
Education at Howard University, developed the theory of Multiple Intelligences in 1983.
It suggests that the traditional notion of intelligence, based on IQ testing is far too
limited. Instead, he proposes eight different intelligences to account for a broader range
of human potential in children and adults. These intelligences are,
 

  •  Linguistic intelligence word smart
  • Logical-mathematical intelligence – Number/reasoning Smart
  • Spatial intelligence – Picture Smart
  • Bodily Kinesthetic intelligence – Body Smart
  • Musical intelligence – Music Smart
  • Interpersonal intelligence – People Smart
  • Intrapersonal intelligence – Self Smart
  • Naturalist intelligence – Nature Smart

As a matter of fact all human beings have Multiple Intelligence. All human beings posse
all eight intelligence in varying amounts. These intelligences are located in different areas
of the brain and can work independently or together. These Multiple Intelligences can be
nurtured and strengthened or ignored and weakened. It is not Singular intelligences or
Multiple. Every person is a unique blend of dynamic intelligences. Through multiple
intelligences the input of new learning is assimilated and promoted to engage the whole
class in listening, observing, feeling, touching and moving. It appeals to different senses
and learning styles. Everyone is born with seven intelligences. Students come to classroom
with different sets of developed intelligences. Some are strong and some are weak. These
combinations of intelligences determine how easy or difficult it is for a student to learn
information when it is presented in a particular manner. This is referred to as a learning
 style.

Verbal Linguistic Intelligence
     * Linguistic Intelligence is the capacity to effectively use words, either orally or in
        writing, 
like to read, write and tell stories.
     * Good at memorizing names, places, dates and trivia. 
     * Learns best by saying, hearing and seeing words 
     * Becomes politician, public speaker, storyteller, talk show host, journalist, play writer, 
       poet and editor

Mathematical Logical Intelligence
    Students with logical-mathematical intelligence have the ability to deal effectively with,

  • Logical patterns and relationships
  • Statements and prepositions (if, then, cause-effect)
  • Functions and complex processes
  • Related abstractions

Like to do experiments, figure things out. Work with numbers, ask questions and explore
patterns and relationships. Good at Maths, Reasoning, Logic and Problem Solving. Learn
best by categorizing, classifying and working with abstract patterns/relationships.

Musical Intelligence

Musical intelligence is the capacity with musical forms to identify, Discriminate and Judge,
Transform and Express,

  • Like to Sing, Hum Tunes, Listen to Music
  • Good at Picking Up Sounds, Remembering Melodies, Noticing Pitches/Rhythms and
  • Keeping Time
  • Learns Best by Rhythms, Melody and Music
  • Becomes Music Lover, Music Critic, Composer, An Instrument Player/Perform                                                                                                                        

Bodily-kinesthetic Intelligence
       Bodily Intelligence is the capacity to use your complete body in expressing ideas and
feelings, including the facility to use your hands to create or transform things,

ike to move around, touch and talk and use body language, is change.  
     * Is good at physical activities (Sports/Dance/Acting) and crafts.       
     * Learn Best by Touching, Moving, Interacting with Space and Processing Knowledge
        through Bodily Sensations.
  
   * Become Actor, Athlete, Dancer, Artistic Painter, Mechanic, Sculptor and Surgeon.
 
Inter-personal Intelligence
    Inter Personal Intelligence is the capacity to quickly grasp and evaluate the moods,
intentions and feelings of other people,
     
    * Like to have lots of friends, talk to people and join groups
    * Good at Understanding People, Leading Others, Organizing, Communicating, 
      Manipulating and Mediating   Conflicts
    * Learns best by Sharing, Comparing, Relating, Co-operating and Interviewing

Intra Personal Intelligence
    Students with Intra Personal Intelligence have an honest, accurate and comprehensive
picture of themselves and awareness of their inner moods, motivations and desire, self-
discipline tendencies and healthy self-esteem,
 
  
    * Likes to work alone and pursue own interests
    * Good at Understanding Self, Focusing Inward on Feeling/Dreams, Following Instincts,
       
Pursuing Interest/Goals and being original
    * Learns best by working alone individualized projects, self-paced instruction and having 
      own space
Spatial Intelligence
    Students with Spatial Intelligence have the ability to keenly Identify, Visualize,

   * Like to Draw, Build, Design and Create Things, Daydream, Look at Pictures/Slides,
     Watch Movies and Play with Machines
   * Good at Imagining Things, Sensing Changes, Mazes or Puzzles and Reading Maps,
      Charts
   * Learns best by Visualizing, Dreaming, using the mind’s eye and working with colors or
     pictures

Naturalist Intelligence
   * Like to Work in the Garden, Read Plants and Animals, Read Nature Magazines, Go 
     Hiking, Walk Outside
   * Good at Knowing the Names of Rocks, Flowers, Birds and Animals
   * Learns best by Being out doors and interacting with nature

Multiple Intelligences Approach Encourages
   * To establish effective learning environments and encourage learning readiness

   * It helps to deal with children who are labelled as problem child
   * Help run a ‘leveled’ class
